Top Ten Quotes From the Lips of Spike

Spike lips. Lips of Spike.

Those lips have given us some real gems over the course of the years. And even when they weren’t moving, they were something rather nice to look at.

In honour of James Marsters’s 50th birthday today, I wanted to look back over some of my favourite moments on television. Surprise, surprise — he’s responsible for most of them!

1. You Made a Bear!

From the season 4 episode Pangs, this quote never ceases to make me giggle. There are a lot of Spike gems in that episode, but this is my favourite.

2. You Have Angel Breath

“His hair grows straight up, and he’s bloody stupid.”

Even though the quote is from BuffyBot, this punching bag is classic.

3. Love Isn’t Brains, Children. It’s Blood.

Spike’s speech from the season three episode Lover’s Walk is one of the Big Spike Insight moments of the show. It gives me chills every time I hear it even now. That’s Spike. Vessel O’ Truth.

4. Rest In Peace

Forget the fact that this is one of my favourite Buffy episodes (season six Once More With Feeling). James Marsters has a fabulous voice anyway, and I love this song.

Anyone wants to give me tickets to see James perform live? I’ll give you a cookie.

5. Tell Anyone We Had This Convesation, I’ll Bite You

Any scene with Andrew is an auto-winner. Add Spike and a conversation about bar food, and you get me giggling.

I ate a blooming onion once. Then I found out that it has about 2500 calories. Damn vampires with their unbeatable metabolisms.

6. I Can Feel It. My Soul. It’s Really There. Kinda Stings.

The only vampire in history to go earn his soul back from whatever part of the ether holds vampire souls, Spike succeeded where probably no other vampires even tried.

7. Let Glory Kill Me First. Nearly Bloody Did.

”Β ‘Cause Buffy – the other, not so pleasant Buffy – anything happened to Dawn, it’d destroy her. I couldn’t live, her bein’ in that much pain. Let Glory kill me first. Nearly bloody did. ”

This prompts Buffy’s first real kiss with Spike. It’s also one of the first moments she sees his love for her as it is: real. And she tells him so.

8. They Put The Spark In Me. Now All It Does Is Burn.

Buffy: You got your soul back. How?
Spike: It’s what you wanted, right? It’s – It’s what *you* wanted, right? And – and now everybody’s in here, talking. Everything I did, everyone I – and him. And it. The other… the thing… beneath… beneath you. It’s here, too. Everybody… they all just tell me go. Go… to hell.
Buffy: Why? Why would you do that?
Spike: Buffy, shame on you. Why does a man do what he mustn’t? For her. To be hers. To be the kind of man who would nev- To be a kind of man. And she shall look on him with forgiveness… and everybody will forgive and love. And he will be loved. So everything’s okay, right? C-can we rest now? Buffy? Can we rest?

Spike’s evolution is one of the most poignant things I’ve ever seen on television. And this scene gets me every time.

9. I Felt Alright When It Started

One of my favourite moments of double entendre on the show. Newly-chipped Spike tries to bite Willow and fails, with the following exchange.

Spike:I don’t understand. This sort of thing’s never happened to me before.
Willow:Maybe you were nervous.
Spike:I felt all right when I started. Let’s try again.
(He tries, but he can’t do it.)
Spike:Damn it!
Willow:Maybe you’re trying too hard. Doesn’t this happen to every vampire?
Spike:Not to me, it doesn’t!
Willow:It’s me, isn’t it?

And finally, my favourite all-time Spike quote.

10. I Know With Perfect Clarity Exactly What You Are.

This is love.

I have seldom encountered something that never loses its effect on me over the years, but this is one of those things. I can’t watch Touched without tears, and I can’t define love without thinking of this speech.

That wraps up my favourite Spike moments!

Happy Birthday, James Marsters! On behalf of every Buffy fan who is forever grateful for your excellence in portraying one of the most complex and well-developed characters ever on television, I hope your day is full of love, joy, and maybe a few monsters. Because we know you can take them.

You’re brilliant. Happy 50th!

  1. That last one always gets me too. I would love to see James sing live.

    • I agree. He’s one of the few people I will admittedly and unabashedly go all fangirl over. Meeting him in person would probably make me die of squee.

  2. I too go all fangirl over Spike. Great quotes and clips. Thanks! Must go watch Buffy now. πŸ˜‰

  3. Mmm, these are all great. Oh, Spike.

I couldn’t find a clip, but one of my favorite all time Spike moments is when he kidnaps Buffy in Season Five Episode 14 “Crush,” and as she’s tied up he says “I love you” and just the way he says it…ooh, sexiness.

But yes, that last one always makes my eyes shiny.

  4. I had a crush on Spike. After reading this, I think the flame might still be there. Thanks Emmie!

  5. I would choose Spike over Angel any day. Spike has that hotness to him Angel could never find. No, David Boreanaz is the perfect brooding vampire with a soul. Spike is the ultimate badass.

    • See above, re: my mission statement: “Saving the world from brooding, one self-actualized vampire at a time.”

Angel can go back to hell (for the bazillionth time). I’ll keep Spike. πŸ™‚

  6. Number 9 is my all-time favorite scene! I love it! These are all great!

  7. Dammit Emmie, you made me cry and I still have make-up on from last night…

  8. Oh, and happy birthday, James.

  9. I adore Spike. My husband got in to see him at Comic Con and I didn’t make it to him in line in time. So irritated! The things I sacrifice for my craft. πŸ™‚

  10. I love Spike! My favorite is #8. After season 6 when Spike tried to rape Buffy in the bathroom and she fought him off, he sped off on his motorcycle for parts unknown and as a Spike and Buffy fan, I was saddened by that development in his character. This is the episode where you find out what he did: he went to get his soul back so he could be a better man. For her.
