Have a book out?
I’m happy to review books for authors. If you have a book and are looking for reviewers, you are welcome to contact me at emmiemears (at) gmail [dot] com. At this time, I’m only able to read manuscripts formatted for Kindle or on my computer in .rtf or .pdf form. I’ll also be happy to read from an ARC.
Genres I will review*:
- Fantasy (and all subgenres)
- Light sci-fi
- Pretty much any speculative fiction, including dystopian, steampunk, etc.
*These are the genres I feel most at home reading. I’m familiar with their conventions and thus feel comfortable speaking to their strengths. If you have a different genre, I’ll still consider reviewing it on a case-by-case basis.
What I Read For
I love to read. My bookshelves are stacked to the ceiling and hold many more books than would fit at first glance. I want to be sucked into a story, wooed to love characters, and immersed in a new world.
When I read a book to review it, I analyze specific aspects:
- Character creation
- Coherence of plot
- My suspension of disbelief
- Writing quality
- Conventions and usage
While that’s not an exhaustive list, it gives you an idea of what I’m looking for when I open a book. The final item is whether I would recommend the book to others or not.
I will not post reviews for books that I would give less than three out of five stars. If you ask me to review your book and I don’t feel it meets that standard, I will explain to you privately why. I will not discuss reviews publicly in advance for this reason.
While my hope is that any book to hit publication would be at least at a three star level, I have encountered the occasional book that is not ready for sale or distribution, and I won’t create a positive review for something I don’t feel is ready for markets. I will never decline to post a review without offering an explanation of what I felt was lacking. That said, the explanation will not be an in-depth critique. Keep in mind that books and publishing in general are highly subjective, and what doesn’t work for me may work for someone else. I only feel comfortable reviewing books I would recommend to other readers without hesitation.
When I agree to read your book, I will give you an estimated turnaround time and update you when I am about to post the review.
If you have any questions or would like to ask me to review your book, please contact me through the form on the connect page.
Requests for reviews via Twitter/Facebook/Goodreads/etc. will not be accepted and probably will end up in the Fail Whale’s belly. This is for organizational reasons more than anything. Contact me through the form if you have a request.
